About us

The story of VELLA NERO began in 2007, when sisters Gina, Vicky and Aileen Young moved into an empty site on Clarence St, in Sydney's bustling CBD.  They set out to develop something truly unique within the emerging speciality coffee scene.

The trio launched the first on-site coffee roastery located in the heart of the CBD, bringing workers, shoppers and city-dwellers a taste of something extraordinary.  They worked tirelessly to develop roast profiles and blends that would shake the industry up, and that they did...

Just four months after opening the doors to their one-stop roastery, retail store and espresso bar concept, the VELLA NERO team won their very first roasting award.  Within their first year of coming onto the scene as unknowns, they were then awarded many coveted titles including "Sydney's Best Coffee" (in both the milk-based and black coffee categories) by the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Living, and "Champion Espresso" Award by Sydney Royal Fine Foods.

Their time at the Clarence St flagship was 7.5 years of colourful and crazy-wonderful times - a real community of coffee lovers coming together daily to share a common thread of amazing coffee, food and company!

Whilst they sold the cafe in 2015, VELLA NERO still remains true to their pursuit of excellence... of chasing the perfect cup.  The Young sisters continue to roast and sell their coffee beans (through wholesale and online).  You can find their superb range of single estate and origin coffees, speciality blends and coffee-related products here - in the comfort of your own home.

From their family, to yours! XO
